Talent must be tended, like a garden

You crave a role that will let you do what you do best…if you can just put your finger on what that is!

Listen to this live, 1-hour interview on my approach to personal career branding with The Power Connection on Blog Talk Radio, June 29, 2010.

Personal Branding: Key in Transition, as well as in PromotionGuest: Linda Putz, Career and Job Search Strategist; Talent Management Consultant

Does this describe you?

  • You’re restless.  Sometimes you wonder if this is all there is.
  • Your career direction seemed fine at one time but has become increasingly unsatisfying. You've tried but you can't imagine how on earth you can change careers and still meet your commitments.
  • You wonder if the potential you thought you had will ever bear fruit...if you will ever do something that's important.
  • You’re afraid you’ll have to start over at the beginning.
  • You’re willing to risk a change, if you can be sure it will be in the right direction.
  • You know what you'd like to do, but you don't have confidence in your ability to navigate the new marketplace.

You’d be surprised how many people struggle with this.

Monster.com and Internet quizzes just aren’t enough to sort through every career dilemma.

It can be like trying to put a puzzle together without seeing the picture on the front of the box…and you don’t even get all the puzzle pieces at once, as it says in the book, Pathway to Purpose.

Vocational discernment IS puzzling at times.  But with the right help, what feels like a painful dead end can actually turn into an adventure.

The key is matching your growing strengths and values with the needs in an evolving marketplace, whether that's in the corporate, public service, non-profit, volunteer, or entrepreurial world.

And as well-meaning as family and friends can be, sometimes they just can't untangle the knots that can form in a career path that used to fit but has really started to chafe.  With help, you can save yourself years of spinning your wheels, and at the same time update you career navigation skills...an investment in your vocational currency that only increases in value.

How We'll Work Together

Contact me for an initial consultation at no charge. We’ll talk first about your situation to get an overview of your challenges and whether I can help.  I want to be absolutely sure that you are aware of any public resources you're entitled to and that any work we do together will be worth your while.

If we decide there's a fit, we’ll unearth valuable nuggets from your career-to- date, interpret results from assessments if needed, set goals, and clarify your brand and how well it's aligned with your sense of purpose, your online presence, and your resume.  If one goal is to find a new work role, we'll tailor an effective search strategy.

Every time we meet, we’ll generate action steps for you to take between sessions, with email and phone support to help you follow through and make course corrections when necessary.

We can meet in person, at Starbucks, over the phone, or by email.

Feel free to contact me with any questions.

I offer hourly sessions as well as 3- and 6- session or 6-12 month packages to make your investment affordable and worth your commitment.

Research and Experience Shows...

Focus on strengths — We tend to focus on fixing our weaknesses.  Yet a landmark study of more than two million people by Gallup showed that taking our strengths to the next level, while working to minimize the impact of any weaknesses, is much more productive.

Accept what you can’t offer — and in doing so, face what may and may not be the best matches between you and the marketplace at this stage of your work life.  It is just as important not to frustrate your weaker aptitudes as it is to use your stronger ones.

Know you are made for a purpose — to “add to life” in ways only you are designed to do, as Rick Warren says in The Purpose-Driven Life.  Clarifying that purpose is a dynamic, lifelong process, with some frustration built into it.  But my view is that at each step you are building skills that will ultimately serve you well by contributing more effectively.

Though some tweaks or real change to your work life may be required, you don’t have to start over.   None of your past work experience is wasted...but it may need to be reframed.

“I’ve known people...when their future suddenly came into focus.  But most of us don’t see it all at once.  We start with an inkling, a cluster of interests, a longing that won’t go away.”    Bruce Wilkinson
